My girlfriend recently took me (and her coon hound, Henry) to Point Pinole. I was really impressed by it.
For East Bay and North Bay residents, this is a great place to take your dog for a sunset walk this summer, the views of the Bay between Carquinez Straits and Richmond and the North Bay are SPECTACULAR.
There is a $5 fee per car, plus a $2 per dog fee admission at the gate, just FYI, so its the kind of place to bring a picnic and stay awhile, since you are paying to get in.
Here is the information from the East Bay parks

I'm curious about other dog-owners favorite places for a sunset hike or walk...

I have been to Point Pinole where it is great for dog walkers and family BBQs and an incredible view of the Bay. I would also like to mention that if you go after 6pm, you can park and bring your dog for free, while you enjoy that beautiful summer sunset.
There is another place to take your pooch, that is free admin/parking, and boasts another gorgeous view of the water. Carquinez Straight, has a trail that loops around with views for you to enjoy and rolling hills for your pooch to run free. But keep in mind that there is poison oak on the trail, just in case you are susceptible. The beginning of the trail is in the sun, but you get some relief under large eucalyptus trees.
I am always looking for trails with shade. If you know of any great shady trails, I would love to hear about them.

I think the Albany Bulb -- a.k.a. Albany Waterfront Park -- is a fun place to take your dog. There's a pretty, dog-friendly beach and then a nice long loop with some great scenery. There are stunning views of the bay and the Golden Gate, plus funky outdoor art (mostly sculpture) created from found materials, including driftwood and well, garbage. You can see some terrific sunsets from this park, too. Enjoy!

I am also curious about other places to take your dog. I have a new pup and was thinking about taking him up to Joaquin Miller park for a hike. Then it occured to me that I didn't know what the dog rules for hiking trails were in the East Bay. Is there some place online I can find this information out? thanks.

The city of Walnut Creek is very close to opening their dog park at Heather Farm park. Its taken nearly a decade for this to happen! Should open sometime in October....more information at www.wcdog.org

I am also curious like you. In my country, people usually take their dog in the morning when they are doing morning exercises in the parks. Do you have the right to let your dogs run freely in that place?
