This weekend my family discovered a great place to eat in Central California -- AJ Spurs. AJ Spurs has at least four locations, all of them known for huge portions of hearty food, reasonable prices and a family-friendly atmosphere. After hearing some friends rave about the AJ Spurs in Templeton (near Paso Robles), we tried the one in Buellton (near Solvang) and we were not disappointed. Every meal starts with a crock of vegetable soup, some salsa and incredibly yummy, tequila-spiked beans -- and ends with a root beer float! Entrees come with green salad, rice pilaf and tasty skillet-prepared potatos. So even before you've chosen your entree, you know you're getting a tremendous amount of food. My husband and I decided to share a plate of ribs -- half beef and half pork. They were very yummy -- both in the restaurant and as leftovers. Yup, even though we split the entree we still brought home an enormous amount of food!
AJs has plenty of high chairs for little ones and the staff seems happy to accomodate babies and toddlers. The western-themed decor is fun and the taxidermy is fascinating to kids of all ages. Our little guy was dying for some ribs, but he'll have to wait a few years. I think AJs is now our restaurant of choice for central California roadtrips!
