Anyone been to the giant Sturgis event in August? Is it a complete zoo? Tips on getting a place to stay ...for 2008??
I have never heard of this event Rick. Can you elaborate on it?

Stugis is a little town in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Rapid City is the closest town (25 miles). They have been having a Motorcycle Rally for 67 years! This year it is August 6th - 12th, 2007.
About 500,000 bikers of all descriptions attend this weeklong event. Therer are races, contests, vendors (sales of over $12M). Nearly 80,00 "vehicles" (mostly cycles) attend this "people watching" good old time!
Nearby Mt Rushmore, Custer, Devil's Tower all provide for a neat trip.
OK, I've not been - and I only have Moped...but it seems to be like what Reno's Hot August Nights is for cars. My 2 brothers (back East) are cycle riders and I am thinking of going to "check it off the list"...Hey, I've been to Burning Man 3 times! :eek:

Hi guys, I'm back from my travels (Ireland and Ohio - what a juxtaposition!). I've never been to Sturgis. In 1995 I was headed east and I kept meeting bikers headed west to Sturgis. Being generally a solo kinda gal, I wasn't tempted to turn around, but after all these years I'm thinking that it might be an experience akin to something like Burning Man. I won't be going this year, maybe next, in a gang going here from the Bay Area? It ends today, August 12, so I hope you're having a good time. Maybe somebody will report back.

I attended th Sturgis Bike Rally in South Dakota. 400,000 people! :eek: I just took the Safety class and got my license, so I was too chicken to ride in that environment. I need lots of practice. My Bro and his buddy trailered bikes form Georgia and I flew in. I rented a car and followed them. AARRGGHH. :mad:
Great sights. We arrived a week before the actual rally, but did see the first 2 days. The scenery is great ... Black Hills, Custer State Park, Buffalo, Devil's Tower, Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Badlands, Wall's Drug, Minuteman Missile Silo, Deadwood, etc. Very few riders wore helmets. :confused:
Harley had a huge expo at the Civic Center with Demo rides.... I took a Sportster 1200 out for about 5 hours ... around and around the course.
Plan is for me to rent bikes locally this year to practice and we'll all meet in Sturgis and ride in 2009. :)
