View Full Version : Hole in the Wall Gems

There are very few opportunities I’ve found to stumble upon a truly rare hidden gem. And to be fair, this find was not even my own, but when I came upon Jason’s Restaurant in San Rafael, I felt it was.

It was my 20th birthday and my parents had promised to take me some place special to celebrate. But as the car pulled up into the parking space and the key clicked out of the ignition, I found my self perplexed and disappointed. I was facing an unimpressive façade sandwiched between an automotive shop and a tired store front. Nevertheless, you’d be hard pressed to find a college student willing to turn down the promise of good food, and I am no different.

We opened the door onto a truly different world. Though Jason’s location was questionable, the little restaurant was warmly decorated with candle light and wall paintings that transported you to Europe. The food was exceptional, a term I do not use lightly. Every dish was beautifully presented and thoughtfully prepared. The waiters were personable, down to earth and attentive.

For hors d’oeuvres, try the seared scallops in balsamic vinegar reduction… it is absolutely delicious. The seared ahi tuna was perhaps the best seared ahi tuna I have ever had (and I order it as often as I can get it). The arrays of sauces, along with the mango salsa were delicately prepared so as not to overwhelm the flavor of the meat. Being from an Italian family, I generally chose to avoid restaurant offerings of gnocchi, but my mother’s order of wild mushroom gnocchi was well made and delicious. Not too much flour, just perfectly constructed, light, airy pillows. My father’s dish of Cajun pasta was also a hit, and disappeared swiftly. All in all, Jason’s Restaurant in San Rafael was quite a treat and not to be missed, as it has now become my favorite restaurant in Marin.

As I concluded my meal, it dawned on me. This unpretentious oasis lay in such an unseemly place because the purpose was food, not location. Jason’s is a small restaurant, so you are really getting good quality service. I hope you give it a try. (But make sure you have reservations since it is developing quite a following!). Has anyone else found a true hole in the wall gem like Jason’s? I’d love to hear about it.

gotta admit, I've NEVER heard of Jason's..but after your mouth-watering description, I can't wait to try it. I used to have a secret "hole"-actually immaculately clean- that has long since been discovered.

But just in case a few of you have missed it -- it's Bodega Bistro, kinda in the Tenderloin area. I describe it as "like eating at the Slanted Door at about 1/3 of the price." Owner Jimmy Kwok is a hoot, but really know Vietnamese cooking...best to let him cook what he wants and you might get an incredible foie-topped steak!

I had a great meal recently at The Trattoria at 817 4th St. in San Rafael. During the day this spot is Theresa & Johnny's Comfort Food but at night it becomes an Italian food destination with authentic fare and a friendly, casual atmosphere. I've been there twice now and was very impressed each time. The chef, Gaetano Patrinostro, chatted with us and then presented us with a wonderful meal -- excellent Italian cooking. There is a nice review in the Marin IJ (http://www.marinij.com/dining/ci_6025426) for all the details. The restaurant itself is on a busy block and it is small so you could walk right by it......but it is worth seeking out.

I'll have to try out Jason's. Always good to hear of a great restaurant in Marin.

My in-laws are in town this week, so after we drop the kids off at school tomorrow (first day!), my wife and I are taking them over to the Dipsea in Mill Valley for breakfast. MMMMmmmmm... I'm feeling French Toast with a side of Eggs Benny coming on :) :)

Just thought I'd throw in a little update about Jason's. It's been a while since I wrote this post, and Jason's has expanded. The old location is now a new burger joint that is open only at lunch, but is also run by the industrious Jason.

Jason's itself has now moved near the Bon Air shopping center, a risky location seeing as I have rarely seen a restaurant survive in that locale since I was a little girl at my grandparents' golden anniversary. Jason's is now a much larger restaurant, with some new updated menu options accompanied by old favorites. Though I last went shortly after its opening, I have to say I was slightly dissappointed. It seems that the new restaurant is too big for the chef and his newly enlarged crew. Service was slow, although I must mention that some distraction was definitely in play that night due to a woman having a seizure near the kitchen (unrelated to the food). To help smooth things over we got free wine and desert, but the food was a bit cold and the gnocchi weren't completely cooked through (I'm a stickler for good gnocchi as I can cook them myself now, and have learned from my grandmother, who I'm still convinced is the greatest chef in the universe, an unbiased opinion of course.) Even so, the restaurant had a great atmosphere with new romantic outdoor seating warmed by heating lamps in winter, and glowing white christmas lights and candles. The waiters are still friendly and knowledgable, and the menu is still mouthwatering. I have every hope that the young chef will get back into the full swing of things.
