Here are my top 3:

1. Lighting. For me, at dinner, it has to be moderate to low. Bright lights kill the experience for me. Lighting is the # 1 thing a restaurant has to get right.

2. Tables so close you rub elbows with your neighbors. I know more tables mean more cash, but I prefer not to overhear my fellow diners' every word. Va de Vi, do you hear me? You could if you were at the next table.

3. An empty water glass. I'm a big fan of H2O. Please keep me filled up. Is that so hard?

OK, now I feel better. What drives you nuts when you dine out?

Cheers,
Mike

Hey Mike, I am right there with you on number 2. I took my wife to the Lark Creek Inn a few years back for our anniversary, and they sat us at a table that was only a few inches away from another table that had another couple at it. The other couple talked so much to us that it totally ruined our special evening together.

I like to see what I'm eating, so light is fine with me. And I'll take a refill on my diet coke anytime my glass is getting low :)

Pour service really bugs me, dining out has become rather costly at many restaurants, so I expect good to excellent service....

Table's too close together is another, I was sitting at a restaurant in Long Beach listing to a doctor talking about doing surgery on someone :( .... I finally ask the guy would he mind changing the subject I'm trying to eat here.

Hi Stanley,

I'm right there with you on poor service being another pet peeve. Actually, two of my biggest pet peeves at restaurants are:

1) being seated, only to have to wait 10 minutes before a waiter or waitress comes to your table to take the drink order.

2) When finished with the meal, having to wait forever for the waiter to bring the check. When we're done eating, sometimes we just want to get going right away.

I guess I need to work on my patience, huh?

I totally agree with the Guy Fierri comment: I honestly can not get into that foodnetwork addition. I'm going to have to throw a new one in there. I really don't like overly cheerful, attentive waiters. Especially overly flirty ones. I don't go to restaurants to get dates, and I really don't want to have to feel nervous and embarrassed while I'm trying to enjoy a good meal.
