Oakland Market's Fabulous Feasts

OAKLAND MARKET'S FABULOUS FEASTS:  WATCH THE VIDEO

Oakland, California often gets lost in the bright glow cast by its celebrated neighbor, San Francisco. But Oakland is packed with a bundle of its own delights from the beauty of its hills to, past lovely Lake Merritt, through busy Chinatown and down to its active water’s edge. We’ll file our video and

notes in the coming months about all of this. Oakland can keep you nicely entertained and well-fed for a long time. In fact, you can eat your way around the world at the Old Oakland Market and treat your tastebuds in the historic Ratto’s, next door. These are delectable slices of Oakland’s complex and fascinating heritage, and they should be sampled as soon and as often as possible.

Since wandering the culinary world with Kasma, she’s celebrated twenty-one years of teaching and her cooking school is still going strong. In the summer, she teaches week-long classes. The rest of the year, she conducts evening classes and between November and February guides tours of Thailand’s culture and cuisine. Martin Durante has left Oakland for Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting. Ratto’s is now operated by his daughter, Elena, who has downsized the grocery store a bit. Ratto’s is still a great deli and lunch spot. Elena also recommends Café 817, Tamarindo, B, Le Cheval and Breads of India nearby. Happy dining.
