Marin Headlands' Natural Escape

MARIN HEADLANDS: WATCH THE VIDEO

One of the most extraordinary urban vistas anywhere is from the Marin Headlands looking across the Golden Gate to San Francisco. In the background is the famous skyline of the city. In the mid-ground are the graceful curves of the landmark bridge. And in the foreground is the open space of the Marin Headlands, protected forever as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the Bay Area’s huge and complex urban national

park. The Marin Headlands is rugged and picturesque, steeped in human history and home to many species of wildlife. From the modern bustle of San Francisco, the Marin Headlands offers a quick and scenic escape into a slower world. It’s a sudden and astounding contrast. While people crowd the south end of the Gate, non-human animals dominate the north. From the Marin Headlands, dozens of miles further north to Point Reyes, national, state and local parks and preserves link to one another and give nature and history a long and wide corridor in which to flourish. Just a few decades ago, all of this was slated for massive development. Big cities, freeways and marinas were planned. Fortunately, many visionaries and determined activists worked very hard to stop these plans. They saved the landscape and brought parks to the people. As I hike the hills, wander quiet beaches, watch hawks soar over historic military installations and marvel at the view back across the bridge to San Francisco, I always think of those who left us the legacy of the Marin Headlands and the lands beyond. They gave those of us who live nearby and visit from around the world a unique and extraordinary gift.

Since we shot our story, the Marin Headlands and its nurturing institutions continue to thrive, and Linda Rubio can still be found on horseback riding through her favorite hills.
