When I was a kid, Moab, Utah was better known for uranium mining than outdoor adventure. Back then, Moab’s rocks were famous as fuel for nuclear power. Now they power Moab’s economy as the adventure capital of the desert southwest. People flock from all over the world to ride Moab’s slick rocks on bikes and float past its red rock formations on river expeditions of all kinds. Others come to just quietly admire the landscape. You don’t have to be an adventure enthusiast to enjoy Moab, but it doesn’t hurt. Moab’s an excellent base camp from which to explore a huge and largely undeveloped region. There are plenty of outfitters and guides in town and some good restaurants and places to stay. And I’m glad to say, there’s even good coffee in town, which is my own brand of nuclear fuel.
